‘Does my bum look big in this!!’
A few years ago as part of a collective show, I made this piece. The show focused on recycling materials & ideas.
In my general working practice, I meet and fit many women of all shapes and sizes for bespoke clothing. One thing that they all have in common is an uncanny knack of focussing on what they see as their worst body areas. Very rarely do I meet a woman who says ‘I am completely happy with my appearance’. Inspired by this, I had chosen to look back and recycle the 18th Century corsetry that originally inspired me to make fitted clothes; the ‘Stays’ that physically restrain the body, holding in more than just the flesh.
‘Does my bum look big in this?’
Based on an original stay pattern, projects the perfect silk exterior that covers up and holds in check the turmoil of female insecurity. The comments and phrases have been gathered from friends and clients in response to how they preserve their bodies.
Boned with synthetic strips and willow, the uncovered pins emphasis the discomfort that some women feel inside there own skins.
Heres the finished piece with additional paper stomacher panel. More about stomachers in an other post.
